Game of chicken, anyone?

This was the weekend of the “Artisans Tour” in our area. My wife and her friend drove around to various locations to see the crafts and products of many talented artisans.

While there was much to rave about, my wife mentioned one place in particular where she met a cat who thought he was a chicken. It was a blacksmith shop in the back of a nice little farmhouse located amidst some fabulous scenery in the Blue Ridge foothills. She thought it might make an interesting blog topic so we went back today with the camera.

This is one cool cat. Though we’re told he would rather get right into the hen-house to play with the chickens, he is usually relegated to outside the pen. Not to worry, some of the chickens come out to him. Below are some photos of this unusual encounter.

I couldn’t get too close because, while the cat easily befriends the chickens, he’s not at all fond of humans. But I think you’ll get the gist.

And you thought cats were ferocious predators.

  1. Yeah, sure, he “befriends” the chickens. That is one patient cat… 😉

I am truly shocked at all of my blogging friends for thinking this sweet cat has ulterior motives. I sentence you all to attend a viewing of “Born Free” until this unfounded skepticism is purged from your psyche!

P.S. In case I am wrong, all of you are invited to a chicken dinner at my place.

  2. It nice to see him looking so at home and the chickens being so tolerant of their eccentric interloper

If he’s supposed to be the guard cat, he’s doing a lousy job. He only looked rather nonchalantly at that black hen making a break for it outside the pen.

The fox was unavailable for guard duty so the cat stepped in.

Amazing! And the lion will lie down with the hen 🙂

Maybe she is playing chicken just long enough to make the pounce. Great pictures!

Your turn to write, but please don't be wittier than me. My ego is quite fragile.
