Still fishin….but for something a little different……

Our back yard Blue Heron is back. At first, it appeared to be just another fishing expedition (gone fishin’), but this time with romance on his mind, as you will see in the following sequence of pictures. At first his posture was pretty typical, but his mouth was open and he was obviously warbling something. Not the type of thing you would expect from a fisherman who was trying to catch his prey unawares.

Suddenly, his feathers became, dare I say, erect, and he started to walk a little funny, with his wings half-unfolded. We hadn’t seen this before. Then, he just stood in this position and kept up his throat sounds. It soon became apparent that he was trying to impress the gals. He kept this up for several minutes, but to no avail. Finally, in desperation, he reverted to the old “man in the subway” trick. He tried flashing them. Just opened up those wings and let it all hang out in the proverbial “what you see, is what you get” pose. Still no takers.

Unfortunately, at that point something disturbed him and he flew off down the canal, unaccompanied I’m sorry to say. Just another sad story of unrequited love. What do you think?

  1. I had no idea herons could or would do that…what great pictures…I sure hope he found himself a heronnelle.

  2. Give a whole new meaning to “Dirty Bird!” 🙂
Hey, Al, You haven’t been outside modeling any inappropriate water’s-edge behavior, have you? Might that be what scared the girly birds away? 😉

  3. PS definitely a flasher pose! Maybe some bird did give him a nod and a wink?
Maybe it goes down better with feathery birds than with us hairy ones? Peacocks definitely seem to do a very similar display.

  4. Beautiful photos again 🙂 I love heron’s as long as they are not in our garden trying to get our fish!! Did you take these photos or Patty?
