Our back yard Blue Heron is back. At first, it appeared to be just another fishing expedition (gone fishin’), but this time with romance on his mind, as you will see in the following sequence of pictures. At first his posture was pretty typical, but his mouth was open and he was obviously warbling something. Not the type of thing you would expect from a fisherman who was trying to catch his prey unawares.
Suddenly, his feathers became, dare I say, erect, and he started to walk a little funny, with his wings half-unfolded. We hadn’t seen this before. Then, he just stood in this position and kept up his throat sounds. It soon became apparent that he was trying to impress the gals. He kept this up for several minutes, but to no avail. Finally, in desperation, he reverted to the old “man in the subway” trick. He tried flashing them. Just opened up those wings and let it all hang out in the proverbial “what you see, is what you get” pose. Still no takers.
Unfortunately, at that point something disturbed him and he flew off down the canal, unaccompanied I’m sorry to say. Just another sad story of unrequited love. What do you think?
Nice leg-end and wing dancing.
Yes. It reminds me of a lot of my moves on the dance floor.
If you had any photos of the front of that bird, your blog would have to be x-rated, perhaps!
I wonder if it is illegal to possess bird pornography?Maybe I should take down that post.
I had no idea herons could or would do that…what great pictures…I sure hope he found himself a heronnelle.
LOL. A heronnelle? Who knows. Maybe he was just carrying on because he just got audited by the IRS.
I started doctoring one of your heron pictures to put a dirty trench-coat on him, but it didn’t work out. Would have been funny, eh?
The red shoes would have given you away, but great idea!
Give a whole new meaning to “Dirty Bird!” 🙂
Hey, Al, You haven’t been outside modeling any inappropriate water’s-edge behavior, have you? Might that be what scared the girly birds away? 😉
Oh, so that was you with the night vision goggles, eh?
Yup. They have amazing range. Be careful. Be very careful. I have insomnia, so you never know when I’m up and looking for, um, er, inspiration for a blog post. 😉
Hope springs eternal….good luck to the old boy.
Will let you know if we hear the flapping of little wings soon, Jeri.
I think you have way too much time on your hands 😉
I prefer to think of myself as a very busy ornithologist.
Yes, the story unfolded just as you said. HA!
I could always spin a good yarn, Patti.
Amazing! I have always loved great blue herons. We have a beautiful print of one in our den. When they fly, they look like pterodactyls.
They absolutely do. It’s not hard to imagine those giant birds existed when you see one of these babies in flight.
You are soon going to have to include Patty in the title of your blog if she keeps contributing such good photos…. (Not the feet ones!)
Maybe you could change it to. ‘The cvilleans’ no apostrophe!
She is my muse, but no way she gets equal billing!
Lol 🙂 I did think that might be pushing it!! Don’t want to scare off all your female fans either
PS definitely a flasher pose! Maybe some bird did give him a nod and a wink?
Maybe it goes down better with feathery birds than with us hairy ones? Peacocks definitely seem to do a very similar display.
I didn’t see where he landed but maybe there was a sweet young thing waiting for him. Hmmmmm……
She might have noticed you guys with the camera and been shy, or in the bird world, maybe the birds just have to sit tight and let the guys do all the wooing
Herons!!! I wish my iPad wouldn’t try and second guess what I was saying!!
What’s a rogue apostrophe between friends?
Friends or friends of friend’s?
Beautiful photos again 🙂 I love heron’s as long as they are not in our garden trying to get our fish!! Did you take these photos or Patty?
We were standing there so long we split the time.
